The new iOS 5.1 update replaces the 3G indicator with 4G for AT&T customers who use the iPhone 4S. Does this mean users with unlimited data plans now get throttled at 5GB instead of at 3GB if they own an iPhone 4S?
I don't think that changes the data limit for throttling at all... That indicator is only to show the connection speed. When your iPhone 4s connects to an HSPA+ network, it will display 4G since AT&T refers to that network as 4G, although it is not as fast as an LTE network.
I read from an article that as long as you have a 4G phone, AT&T bumps the limit to 5GB. AT&T must have had that in mind when they allowed for the iPhone 4S to be classified as having 4G (not 4G LTE) speed. OR maybe AT&T was refering to 4G LTE only. Maybe this will be clarified later.
I found the article. Hmm; it specifically says "4G LTE smartphone". I guess we didn't see it coming. It's 4G, but not 4G LTE. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...omers-now-throttled-at-3gb-instead-of-2gb.ars
I think that the 4G sign on the iPhone looks so out of place on the status bar, I'm glad I don't have AT&T
Only 4G LTE smartphones have the 5GB cap, all HSPA+ phones (IE: iPhone 4S "4G") are capped at 3GB, so no, there's no change. It's actually funny that Apple caved, and changed it to 4G, that means they're losing their grip on the carriers, only a matter of time before they start coming with bloat.
