I was poking around in iFile and I found a file called "com.apple.commcenter.plist". in the file it says:
    <key>NextUpdate</key>
    <date>2010-08-30T20:00:062</date>

This leads me to believe iOS4.1 will be released on the 30th, either PST or local time.

The file is located in /var/wireless/Library/Preferences

    I have a MB iPod Touch 2g, 8gb

Yeah, it's the check for new software or something like that...
    Mine says
    <key>NextUpdate</key>
    <date>2010-7-10 *****</date>

It seems my next check will have me going to the past.

All it's doing is telling iTunes what date to check for an update. It's not when the new firmware is coming out.

So in theory, I could set it to check for a new update in 2020?

Why does iTunes store this data on your device? iTunes checks for the update so shouldn't iTunes have the date for the next check?
