I read that the 3rd Generation CPU is an ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz that is under clocked to 600MHz which currently isn't much faster then 533 MHz in the 2nd Generation iTouch. Anyone know much about this? Is this to insure compatibility with existing applications or so they can charge us to unlock the full potential of this CPU later on?

Even if there is 67mhz difference its not the same cpu so it must certainly be more powerful. And for underclocking I think its for saving batteries and maybe heat.

You really can't underclock/downgrade. The files are system protected even if u modify the file via SSH it will not work. One guy overclocked the 1G to 533mhz using the 2G file.

Cool, would it be possible for me to clock my 2G to 600mhz with the 3G file since the 2G has a 620 mhz processor?

I doubt it, because it's a different processor.

    • CPU: Initially ARM 400 MHz, but now 412 MHz for 1st generation, 533 MHz for 2nd Generation and ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz underclocked to 600MHz for 3rd Generation.
    • GPU: PowerVR MBX Lite in 2nd Generation and PowerVR SGX GPU for 3rd Generation

It's not MHz that count, as shown by speed comparisons which exceeded apples 50% faster claim

It's not even necessarily the 3G's processor that makes it faster.

The iPod comes underclocked. That's what he was talking about. The 3G processors are underclocked to 600mhz to save battery life.

As do iPhones. And many other devices.

What else could possibly make it 50% faster? More ram? of course it's the processors that make it faster
