Has anybody been able to connect an IPOT to a 3 or 3.5G mobile phone to access Internet?

Nope... most likely will never happen without additional hardware.

RUBBISH! Of course it can be done.
I posted a guide myself to how to get 3G and HSDPA connection on ipod. You just need a windows mobile phone not a nokia.
Jeez, I even posted it in this forum!
    Go HERE,

To get on the move data access for the iPod Touch. NO additional hardware, just a Windows Mobile phone and iPod. Works on any iPod, even ones not jailbreaked.

Does it need to be on a gsm network or cdma? It list a sim card as a requirement but then doesn't mention anything else about it... Who has tested it out?

It wont work on the non-touchscreen Windows stuff. Needs the Windows Mobile pro or whatever they call the full version. If its Wm5/6 and touchscreen it should work.
For the USA people, the sim card is required in the UK because phones require a Sim card. What I should have said is it requires a working Carrier with data tariff of some kind.
If you can access the internet on the PPC phone, you can share it over wifi.
Ive done it myself several times when out and about.
