Ok Im new to ipods infact the new ipod touch 3g version is my first ever mp3/4 player and I got one today in the Apple store in Glasgow (100 mile round trip)

but you know what at first glance / use it seems worth it.

One question though before I email apple

When I connect up my Ipod touch 32 gb - it comes up saying the capacity is 29.28 gb - excuse me thats not 32 gb!!!!!!! About 8% less !!!!

Before I rant to Apple about mis-selling - is this normal????

Is the missing 3gb for all the inside magic/software etc?

It is actually a certain percent. My 8gb ipod says it only has 7gb of space. I assume this is the harware on it or the fact that gb's on the website have a "different" number of bytes than in real life there for taking away storage. you have -8% mine is -12%. My mac computer has "250gb" but in real life only 232.57gb or -7%. I am pretty sure this is space left after firmware on device. In real life you are getting 32, but you can only Use 28. It is interesting though that your device and mine both running 3.1 have different amounts of memory dedicated to firmware. I would have though it to be the same.

You are all correct and incorrect.
What software/computers read is not what hardware has. It is deff 32 gb. If you completely re-wrote the device to be a portable hard drive, it would be 32 gb. iTunes only shows you the space you can use for media and such.

It's because a GB is 1000 megabytes, and a GiB is 1024 megabytes.
Computers use GB for GiB, and manufacturers just use GBs.

Wow, that was a bad explanation...
