Hey so I've been gone for the summer and clearly I've missed a lot on the jailbreaking front.
I left with firmware 3.1.3 jailbroken unteathered on a 3rd gen 32GB iPod Touch.
Now I come back and I see this new jailbreakme.com, a new 4.0.? firmware and a new iTunes version.

I was wondering if someone could just walk me through the process of upgrading and jailbreaking. I would really appreciate it.

Click the update button in iTunes. Navigate to www.jailbreakme.com on your device and slide to jailbreak. Simple.

Restore to 4.0 or 4.0.1 and jailbreak with jailbreakme on your iDevices web browser.

Don't do anything. iTunes will update you to 4.0.2 and the exploit was patched.

    Okay.
    - 4.0 comes out - iPod Touch 1G and iPhone 2G get unsupported
    - 4.0 is jailbreakable with redsn0w on Touch 2G and iPhone 3G
    - comex starts working on a Jailbreak.
    - 4.0.1 comes out for the iPhone
    - comex releases Jailbreakme.com, which uses a PDF Exploit (You can Jailbreak directly on your Device)
    - Apple sees the risk behind it (Malicious Codes) and releases 4.0.2 which patches the Exploit.
    - iPod Touch 4G is about to be released

That's about it. Anybody can add stuff if they want.

BTW. Apple stops you from Updating/Downgrading to anything below 4.0.2 if you haven't got SHSH Blobs saved.

You may need to use a downgrade tutorial to upgrade to 4.0. Check in cydia to see if you blobs for 4.0 saved it will say at the top of the front page. For some reason cydia can save blobs for fimwares you haven't used.

Thanks for all the replies, I was pretty sure I couldn't upgrade because it was likely patched.
In my Cydia it says I have blobs for 4.0 and 4.0.2, which is very weird.
How do I use the blobs to get to 4.0?

I was in the same position. Google for a source to find the 4.0 firmware. Download it. Rename the extension from *.zip to *.ipsw. Backup your phone. In iTunes, Shift+Restore using the new firmware. Restore from your backup in iTunes to get your settings, data back. Then use Jailbreakme.com. Worked for me.

You can get legal and safe firmware form www.theiphonewiki.com And then search for the downgrade tutorial thats on this site, except instead of downgrading upgrade. Just point the hosts file to sauriks server.
