okay, one quick question. i have heard many reports stating that if you install cydia and icy it causes many problems. will there be any problems if i install cydia and rock together but not icy? thanks in advance

Yeah, I would say so. Install Cydia, then go back and install Rock.

Cydia and Rock have more problems than Cydia and Icy, I believe. Rock wouldn't work right when I had Cydia also.

Well, rock and icy works together.
Rock: All default cydia sources, rock store, MUCH faster than Cydia, Installs stuff faster than Cydia, DOESNT CRASH when installing certain apps (When installing sbSettings with cydia, my ipod crashed and I had to restore) app worked perfectly!

So, I recommend just installing rock. You wont ever use the others (Or at least I wont) and their has been no reports on rock and icy not working together, but I cant try because I already have cydia and rock (idk how to delete cydia, lol)

Yeah, I don't trust Rock... By itself it is okay, but with Icy AND Cydia, you've got trouble.

Same here, I used Icy on my 2G when I had that because Cydia crashed too much, but with my 3G it works perfect.

iTunes did that to me once, I had to restore. You could try cleaning out the iTunes preferences files: com.apple.iPod.plist and whatever .iPod.plist there are.
