I really hope that people will read this, so that useless threads aren't created. Many people are FREAKING OUT about wanting to jailbreak their devices/firmware 3.1 / 3.1.1 (for iPod touch.) Below are some things that you should know, and also just for documentation. I will update this thread when updates are released.

    iPhone
3.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable, yet. If you update, you will have to wait for the jailbreak to come out, and then you will be able to enable the unlock once again.

    iPhone 3G
3.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable, yet. You will lose unlock if you update, possibly permanently.

    iPhone 3G
3.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable, yet. You will lose unlock if you update, possibly permanently.

    iPod touch 1G
3.1.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable, yet.

    iPod touch 2G
3.1.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable, yet.

    iPod touch 3G
3.1.1 Firmware - Not jailbreakable. Probably will not be jailbroken for awhile. Although Chronic said that a tethered jailbreak may be iminent for iPod touch 3G very soon. But, of course, this is speculation. Please, be patient for a jailbreak.

Untrue, people can update, then wait for the jailbreak, then still unlock after that, the 2G iPhone has immunity to all the 3G stuff, it can be unlocked regardless of firmware etc.

There weren't any significant changes made to the 3rd generation. They only added in a 64GB, dropped the prices and the 16GB is no longer sold. Physical hardware changes are only made to the 32/64gb models. They now have the same hardware specs as the 3GS i believe. you should be able to see it on the site.

Or you can just use a white screen dfu and ctrl + click on restore and restore into 3.0. Problem solved. Who knows if you even need to do a white screen dfu.

You're thinking of the jailbreak. Updating to 3.1 will also update the baseband, which cannot be downgraded.

Thus, if in the rare chance that an unlock doesn't come out for 3.1, you could very well be permanently stuck.
