Well, I bought a $25 iTunes giftcard the other day, and I coughed up the $9.95 for the software update. A couple days later, my friends iPod needed a restore and re-jailbreak, so he asked me to do it. When he restored, he got the 3.0 software for free. (He has an iPod touch 2G which was running 2.2.1, but now its running 3.0)

Did he get the update for free because I paid 10 bucks on that computer? Or is it just some sort of a glitch?

If somebody could try this out that'd be great.

There is/was a glitch that some accidentally discovered and others exploited. Was an additional $9.95 taken off your account? If so, you're friend owes you one.

EDIT: Did he restore on your computer?

did you get charged another 9.95? if so, then you paid for him. but there was a glitch when 3.0 was released that allows you to get 3.0 for free.

I don't think it's a glitch.. it's the fact that you already bought the 3.0 firmware for the 2G, therefore it's already in the iPod Software Updates folder on your computer. I really don't believe firmwares are linked to accounts/specific iPods.. but I could be wrong.

He did restore on my computer, and 9.95 was not taken off my account.

if a update is in the software folder then it will not be redownloaded, it takes it out of that folder for any ipod touch 2g restored on that computer

I'm pretty sure this accident happened because you authorized the firmware on your computer, so it automatically updates any iPod with the authorized firmware.

    This is my guess.
