Generally speaking, when the battery goes flat, you plug the iPod into a power source...

    Battery Low

the BATTERY LOW SYMBOL won't show up when it goes flat, it won't activate the screen by pressing home or sleep wake, i have to plug it in to a power source to activate the battery low screen.

By "BATTERY LOW SYMBOL" I assume you mean this:

It will only appear if there is a sufficient charge in the battery. Your iPod does not have such a charge, therefore it does not show up. When you plug the iPod into a power source, the battery becomes charged, 'activating the screen' and displaying the 'BATTERY LOW SYMBOL'.

    Did that clear it up?
