I managed to pick up a new 2nd generation iPod touch at the Stanford Shopping Center Apple Store location in Palo Alto, CA. The guy that sold me the iPod told me that the best way to check availability in your area is to call before going to the store, because supplies are arriving at different times. This confirms my personal experience, because the Apple Store in downtown Palo Alto told me they have not received any iPods yet, while the Stanford Shopping Center store had plenty in stock.

As we previously reported, the new iPod touch uses much more compact packaging, which is better both for Apple's bottom line and for the environment:

    The packaging is very slim:

Unboxing the new touch involves several "peeling" steps. Here's the first:

    ...and now it's open:

Here is the iPod touch still attached to the packaging:

Let's turn our attention to the included box of accessories for a second:

The accessory box contains printed materials, headphones, dock spacer, and a USB cable:

Note that the included speakers do NOT have the built-in mic or remote:

Now, back the unpacking the second-gen iPod touch. Here's the second peeling step:

Now I'll cover the iTunes setup process:

Apple tries to hook more MobileMe users during registration. Sorry Apple, not interested:

The setup process allows you to import a backup from your old iPod touch. I chose to just set the new one up from scratch:

The 8 gigabyte model has about 7 gigabytes of usable space. Not bad! The built-in firmware version is 2.1.1:

Hey, if you have the old iPod touch handy, try putting it in the case.

I want to know the results...

sorry, sold my old 8GB touch 3 months ago for $230 (new touch was approx. $241 including California sales tax). I haven't really had a chance to use the new touch extensively and probably won't until tomorrow (pretty tired), but wanted to get the unboxing pics up to share the joy with people that are still waiting to get theirs
