My friends 2nd gen ipod touch is in recovery mode and showes the connect to itunes picture. He gave me his ipod i have tried restoring in its normal mode and dfu mode but no matter what i do i get the error code 1611. Should i just give up on his ipod and say send it back to Apple or is there something I am not thinking of?

Whatever's wrong with it, it's not bricked.

    Yep
It's software related, so there is most likely some sort of fix

Stick it in DFU mode (follow a tutorial on youtube)
Then restore, you should have no troubles restoring then
