Okay, so I have the Spinning Wheel of Death.
    By following the information here:
    http://www.ifans.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2130897&postcount=8
    and
http://www.ifans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101510 (only method 1 worked, and i used this in combination with the method described in the first link. With the first link, the dylib i disabled was cydelete)

I have been able to get my iPod into safe mode, however if i then rename the files and try to respring, it goes back into the Wheel of Death.

I just got into safe mode again, and so this time i uninstalled two of the things i could remember changing during the last cydia update i did before the SWOD, and so i removed AppBackup and CyDelete, and updated MobileSubstrate and Uikit (not sure if that is the right name - one of the command line packages by Saurik).

So when I get back into safemode, what do I need to do to make my device usable again?

Oh, and I really don't want to have to restore.. Which is why i went searching for solutions, and was able to partially fix it, and now just need some help for the final yard

Many thanks to those whose posts I used for help, and to everyone who responds here.

I have tried a hard reset.

Just keep uninstalling packages. Maybe that'll pop it out of the SWOD

Yes, make sure and delete the sources, un-install any packages that came with it and then re-spring / re-boot.
