I have a couple of questions it'd be great to get some answers =]

    I currently have a 3g phone on 2.1 firmware.

    1. What is the best way to backup cydia lists, appstore app data, and gpsphone save files sucessfully when updating to the latest firmware?

    2. What is the best way to jailbreak this latest firmware, and will all of my cydia apps continue to work?

    3. Cyberduck refuses to connect to my phone, although I'm doing everything right. Confused.

I'm assuming you know how to SSH into your phone?

From there you can back up any of the programs / files you want. It will take some time to download them as it is kind of slow but I would definitely download anything you are afraid of losing.

If you really want to upgrade to 2.2.1 you will have to make a custom package while maintaining the 2.2 baseband. The best I can offer is to do a search. I am running 2.2 and I have no desire to go to 2.2.1 as I don't think there is anything that 2.2.1 has that 2.2 does not.

Also, I don't know if they've released the date but 3.0 will be out eventually. I'm not sure how much is different from 2.1 to 2.2 but you will probably want to go up to 3.0 once it is released and the Dev Team works their magic.

I know how but the ssh wasn't working..
I'm currently running 2.1, is it better just to go to 2.2?
If so, how would I do that?

Here is what the 2.2 update would get you (courteous of Apple):

    ▪ Enhancements to Maps
    ▪ Google Street View*
    ▪ Public transit and walking directions
    ▪ Display address of dropped pins
    ▪ Share location via email
    ▪ Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
    ▪ Enhancements to Mail
    ▪ Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
    ▪ Improved formatting of wide HTMLemail
    ▪ Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
    ▪ Improved stability and performance ofSafari
    ▪ Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
    ▪ Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
    ▪ Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings

If you can live without that stuff I'd wait for the 3.0 software but that's just me.

Also, here are the directions I followed for SSHing via Cyberduck:

You need to install BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH (in that order) from under the System category in Installer in order to be able to use it.

Make sure your iPhone is connected to your network. To find your IP address, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi
Click the blue arrow on the network you are connected to. Your IP address will be in there. Use that number for the rest of this guide.

    CyberDuck
    Click New Connection.
In the Protocol dropwdown menu, choose SSH.
    In the Server
    field, input your iPhone's IP.
In the Username field, enter root.
In the Password field, enter alpine, unless you have changed it.
    Click Connect

Might have to check your sources. I had mine installed via Pwnage when I did my initial JailBreak.

The info I pasted might be old and I don't know if you need to mess with BSD Subsystem (or it is installed and I don't see it). OpenSSH is installed through Cydia.

how would I go about upgrading only to 2.2, not all the way to 2.2.1?
Currently I am on a 2.1. I'd like to upgrade only to 2.2, then jailbreak.

With a Mac I'd use Pwnage Tool

I followed a tutorial the first time and can send you the link or there are plenty of instructions out there.

I think I've got it figured out.
I should just download firmware 2.2, then restore to that, then jailbreak, right?
