after a couple of hours fumbling with DOS emulators I finally came across a project called joequake which emulates old dos parameters that no longer exist on XP.

    1)get quake4iphone from cydia
    2) download joequake http://www.runecentral.com/joequake/news.html
3)unzip joequake to your folder or drive of choice
    4)get the quake freeware:http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake/index.php?game_section=demo

5)place all the files from the quake download into the joequake folder
6)run joequake by clicking the icon...
7)open quake4iphone and click multiplayer<new game to start a server
8)joequake may have erros on start {cant find CFG} dont worry and press escape
    9)click multiplayer<join game in joequake
10)select tc/iP (only choice) and enter your ipods IP
    11) kill stuff

its mostly simple server set-up every gamer should know, however I've only been able to run the server from my ipod, I'd imagine you can do this with other ipods too, I'm jsut alone at 3 in the morning lol

well the retail version was first made for DOS and most of the original DOS programming has been removed from windows XP. So if they are selling an updated version or if you know a bit more about DOS commands than I do you won't need joequake

Once you have downloaded the joequake.zip, make a folder on your desktop called joequake and extract it to that.

from there you must download the quake software: http://www.idsoftware.com/games/quake/quake/index.php?game_section=demo

this again should either come in a .zip or .rar package

take all the contents of the quake freeware game .zip file and extract those to the same folder as joequake on your desktop

***if the extraction process creates a folder within the joequake folder [desktop<joequake<quake] you must move all of the contens to the main joequake folder otherwise it will not recognize the files are there***

Now go onto your ipod's quake select multiplater<new game<tc\ip<ok<begin game

Now go into the folder you made on you computer and click eitherone of the face icons (joequake_gl) has better graphics

click miltiplayer<join game<tc\ip and enter your ipod IP and click join...
