I got my friend's 1st gen iPhone and when I go to settings the whole WiFi thing is greyed out. I've tried restoring it and it still does it. I'm thinking it's a hardware problem but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

    4G iPod touch
Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings. That worked for me once and I've never had that problem ever since.

    Is this thing Jailbroken?

I never had the problem with my 2G's but I believe it is a problem with the Jailbreak itself and the firmware that the phone is (or was on).

I think the solution is to downgrade the firmware and then build a custom firmware and restore to that.

You can find some information via a search or I can post some information that I found.

What is the firmware currently on the phone? Was it just upgraded from an earlier firmware?

I think you are going to have to downgrade it to either 1.1.4 or 2.0.2 and go from there.

I did a Google search for "WiFi grayed out" and found enough information to help. My previous three 2G's did not have this problem and I have not heard what causes it but it seems to be a somewhat common problem.

Wireless radio (or whatever it is called) may be FUBAR'd.
