Just bought a 1gen 16G apple Ipod Touch for $20. Seller said the backlight is dead. Took it home to connected and this is what happens.

    -connect usb, itunes doenst read
-Apple logo appears very dim (may be cause of back light out)
-After a few seconds the screen fades in vertically lines and goes black
seems to de-digitize? havent seen this at all.
-power button doesnt seem to work
-with the menu button held it will go into recovery mode
-every now and then the recovery screen will turn on
-will be read by itunes as recovery mode
-occassionally the charger light will come on but will not charge

Dont know if the previous owner tried to jailbreak. However, opening the Touch was attempted No cracked screen.

I've read over many threads about black screen, apple logo stuck and others but none have seemed to have solved my problem. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Here is what has been done so far.

    -Updated itunes to 9
-Restored touch many times but recieved same results, 1603
-Downloaded: quickpwn, firmware 1,2,3, updated ports, switched to back usb port
-Attempted above programs and resulted in nothing

    Will do:

    -use a different usb
    -attempt jailbreak
    -take it to Apple
    -Sell it

Update: Every now and then the recovery mode will be on (usb link and itunes icon). Updated iTunes to 9.0 and tried to restore ipod touch but got error 1604 and 1603. Downloaded quickpwn to recover ipod touch but now neither itunes or quickpwn will read the ipod touch.

Okay will be downgrading to itunes 7 and attempt quickpwn agian.

    Whats next?

Then you may just have to buy a new one.

What to do with your iPod Touch

    1) Sell it for parts
    2) Destroy it
    3) Burn it
    4) Recycle it
    5) Take it to a professional for repair (will cost a LOT)

Tried doing the Shift+restore, i guess the ipod does go into DFU mode, but then shuts off during the last steps of restore. Maybe im should use 1.1a instead of 3.0?

Downloaded firmware 1.1, 2.1, and 3.0 but still no dice beacause only 3.0 seems to be only the option for restore.

Okay thanks for the input. I guess i could get my money back ($20).

Edit: May have made some progress idk?

Every now and the battery will seem like its charging (red battery and little lightning bolt) but it doesnt. Have tried updating port (which is reading apple device) and switching usb to the back of desktop. Still nothing. I am using however an ipod nano charger since i did not recieve an ipod touch charger when i bought it.

Things i am assuming the problem. 1) Usb cable. 2) Battery problem (power button doesnt work will only turn on if plugged int. 3)Firmware, which may have been caused by jailbreak attempt.

the back cover plate was removed when i got it so maybe the problem is there.

    My to do solutions:

    Get a new USB charger.

I will attempt a jail break myself or use the tools to undue the process (if possible)

I will take it to Apple and see what can be done and gain Apple in-store credit.

Finally if all of the above fail, sell it for more or less.

    Will keep this updated.

Edit: I also notice with quickpwn already open and plug the Ipod in and goes into recovery mode, quickpwn will close down due to error. Any help?

Also why doesnt itunes let me restore firmware to 2.0 but allows me to use 3.0 on a 1G?
