My trusty old 1G iTouch is stuck in what iTunes calls recovery mode.
It only show the wallpper of the plug, arrow, and cd disc now. iTunes
    says it's in "recovery mode".

I was using Blackra1n to jailbreak after installing 3.1.2.
I'm hoping that some4eone can tell me how to unbrick my favorite toy!

    thanks, and Merry Christmas.

When it is in recovery, Run Blackra1n Inside of itunes.

I used iTunes to restore 3.1.2 7D11 and tried again.
While still in iTunes, I executed Blackra1n again.
It sees the iPod 1G, and puts it into recovery mode,
then freezes up again within seconds.

The iPod sticks in DFU and no longer shows up in the list of devices
under My Computer. All I can do is start again by restoring 3.1.2 again.
and I'm in the loop. If I restart blackra1n it can't find the iPod.

Should I use another method of jailbreaking?
Has blackra1n been been used successfully on a 1G? (32gb)

Yes blackra1n has been used successfully on a 1G. Unfortunately, unless you have a Mac, blackra1n is the only way for you to jailbreak your iPod on that firmware.

Any idea what I can do differently? I'm running Vista on the host computer.

    Here's what happens in detail:

    (1) backra1n says "Entering Recovery Mode"
    (2) The USB plug shows up on the iPod display
    (3) The device icon disappears from the list of devices under My Computer
    (4) Itunes says, "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. It must be
restored before it can be used with iTunes".

From then on, I'm stuck with the only option being to restore, with iTunes,
and start the process all over again...

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Turn on your iPod. This might only go as far as displaying the apple logo.

    2. Hold the power and home buttons down. The iPod will turn off after 10 seconds, but keep holding down.

    3. After the iPod powers off, release the power button , but keep holding down the home button.

    4. After a couple more seconds, you should hear that magical ding dong sound that means the iPod is coming back alive, and that Windows has detected it. You might see Windows displaying a "New Hardware" popup. It is now safe to release the home button, and your iPod is in DFU mode.

    5. Now iTunes will see it as a iPod in DFU mode and should ask you to automatically restore its firmware.

    6. iTunes has to download the new firmware, and it takes a while, so go waste some time.

    7. Done!

    Hope this helps.
