    Hi,
just to see if my iPod Touch is "normal":

iTunes shows only 14,84 GB capacity on my 16GB iPod.
What are the missing 1,16GB used for?
It's an iPod not a M$ Windows Vista

Does anybody have an explanation for that hugh amount on unusable (for media data) memory?

    Regards

Just because iPod touch says 16gb doesn't mean that is the exact amount of space you get. It is actually like 93% percent of what the advertised size is as far as I can remember. Like a 1TB drive (1,000MB) is actually about 930GB of usable space when you open it out of the box. Also, if I am correct the iPod Touch and iPhone uses a dumbed down version of OS X as the firmware / OS. So that is where some of the space is taken up. For the Built-in OS.

    So 16GB * 93% = 14.88GB usable - OS = around 14.84GB??!?

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Ya, I think your right. Every time I have ever gotten an iPod it's never the actual 30GB, 8GB, etc. It's always just a little bit less.

1.7GB is a bit rich for a mobile OS. Vista takes like a Gig at most.

im running a 8 GB xbox hard drive in my computer right now, and i installed Vista and it took up 7 GB. i got it down to about 1.5 GB with vLite, but still. and btw, the OS takes up 300 MB (which i why when you first jailbreak your ipod shows up as a 300 MB ipod, because the fstab is changed and itunes is reading the OS partition of the disk, which is 300 MB, instead of the data partition of the disk, which is 14.84 GB

We "humans" calculate 1 Gb as 1024 Mb.. a computer and the ipod calculates 1 Gb as 1000Mb... There is your missing space. for every 1Gb you lose about 24Mb

    Well said, but also.

Even if you were to remove all applications, and the mobile version of Mac OS X, you wouldn't have 16GB. It's just the way it goes. You'd probably have about 15.x GB, then you can start subtracting the OS, and apps.
