    On the first gen's the 1604 error is where you can't downgrade from a higher firmware to a lower firmware, using the current version of iTunes (7.7+)

    To fix it, download a lower version of iTunes such as 7.5(Use google) and then shift restore from there.

    you also get that error if you try to apply patched firmware to an ipod that hasnt had its memory patched, thats when i got it the error anyways

    This error means you tried to patch the memory of the ipod while it was in recovery mode (the little picture of the USB cable on the ipod) instead of DFU mode (black screen on ipod).
    Try to enter DFU mode again, and then re-patch the memory.

    No clue how to patch the memory? Have no fear. :

    My screen was black when I did the memory patching though.
