    So I bought a 16gb touch but for some reason itunes only recognizes 14gb. Can the OS really take up 2 whole gbs? Also, my friend who got an 8gb says he has the full 8gb available. Whats the deal?

    Just because something says 16gb doesn't mean your going to get all 16gb, While your reading this go ahead and look at your hard drive size on your computer, I guarantee it is not as big as advertised and normally the larger the storage the larger the difference between advertised and the amount that the OS reads, In actuality its not the manufacture that is wrong, it is the OS. Here is a link to better explain things for you guys that get confused when things aren't showing the full disk space.

    in really ist 1gb = 1.073.741.824 bytes, but for apple is 1gb = 1.000.000.000

    sort of except you have it in reverse, and its not just apple, this applies to most if not all operating systems. 1GB equals 1000MB to the manufacture, but the OS measures 1GB as 1,024MB hence why your 16gb ipod touch only reads like 14.8ish and not the full 16.

    its very easy, its a problems with unit conversion. Its different kB and KiB:

    16GB = 16x10^9 (decimal units)
    16GiB = 16x2^30 (binary units) -> because 1KiB = 1024 Bytes, 1MiB= 1024KiB, 1GiB= 1024MiB

    The problems are that its very normal confusing both. PCs usually refer always all measures in binary units, but all measures when you buy a DVD or others devices use decimal units

    16GB = 16.000.000.000
    16GiB = 17.179.869.184

    16GB=16x10^9 / 1024 = 15625000KiB / 1024 = 15259MiB / 1024 = 14.9 GiB aprox.

    Hi, and don't forget that it is only ONE hard drive with TWO partitions on it.

    just type "df -h" on the ssh command line and you will see. It has a seperate partition for the OS, so that space is not available to iTunes
