    I'm sorry, so the iPad isn't social (FaceTime, movies, email, etc etc), but a laptop is?

    iPad is definitely worth the $500 for anyone except that camera sucks. I own iPad 2 and its great. I watch movies n videos there. Don't really considered it as a laptop as it's not ready, and it's touchscreen. Don't really like touchscreen typing.

    I hate to disagree with a mod, but all I see is a friendly, opinionated discussion.

    #1 It's Expensive
    - $499? Not really.

    #2 It's Not the Best Solution for Note-Taking or Editing Documents
    - Combined with mobility, yes it is.

    #3 It's Too Distracting
    - Kids can distract themselves with a pencil, eraser, just about anything.

    #4 It's Ultra-Portable and Ultra-Droppable
    - Don't drop it, or get a nice case. It's that simple.

    #5 What Makes it Desirable to your Kid is What Makes it Desirable to Criminals
    - This is true, the solution would just be to keep it under close watch. I mean, if I was a jerk, I'd wanna steal one too.

    #6 It's Meant for the Enjoyment of One Person, Which Means Social Seclusion
    - I have an iPad and it actually DRAWS attention to me...

    #7 Digital Text Books are a Marvel, but There's No Secondary Market
    - Newsstand baby!!! But actually there should be a dedicated textbook market on the iPad. I kind of agree with this one.

    #8 It's a Status Symbol, Plain and Simple
    - It's more a productivity weapon than a status symbol. Which is all that matters. However, I do feel like a badass with my iPad in public :)

    #9 It'll Already be Old Technology by the Time You Buy It
    - Not really. Old is two years, IMO. And secondly, find me a device that isn't old "by the time you buy it."

    #10 They'll Also Want a Laptop, Too
    - I bought an iPad and don't want a laptop. iOS also makes the iPad PC-free, so a laptop won't be necessary. iCloud hun.
