ive tried another pair and had the same problem,

i dont think its a hardware problem as when i wiggle the jack it doesnt help, (plus its brand new) so i was wondering would a upgrade to 1.1.2 possibly help me in any way? i dont really want to upgrade it and loose my apps etc if it wont help but the crackeling is really doing my head in!

    any help is greatly appreciated

1.1.2 did make the sound better, this based on others reports.
    Don't know about your problem.
I did not use my ipod T untill it was jailbroke 1.1.2.
    Jailbroke it first thing.

    Can't hurt to jailbreak 1.1.2
The 1.1.2 firmware, the app needed to jailbreak 1.1.2, and videos to show you how are in my sig.

hey, I had the same thing happen to me, too. I found out it was because the headphones werent all the way in. You really have to push until you feel and hear a click. There is no way software could affect the overall sound throughout the entire device (youtube, Ttr)
