Chronic Dev Team “Aren’t Going Anywhere Just Yet”

Earlier this week, it was brought to our attention that the Chronic Dev Team had finally shut down after a good, long 3 years.  They have been dedicated in providing the community with constant free jailbreaks, including the relatively recent ‘corona’ untether for iOS 5.1.1.  And today, unlike what most have assumed since the announcement of the “evad3rs“, they have announced that their role in the jailbreaking community is yet to be finished. The Chronic Dev Team posted the tweet above stating that they “aren’t going anywhere just yet.

Currently, the Chronic Dev Team is composed of @p0sixninjaninja, @pod2g, @pimskeks, and other members who have faithfully stuck around since 2009.  But as time passes by, this team has slowly been disbanding, and most of its members have gone their separate ways.  Most notably is the recent group formed by @planetbeing, @pimskeks, @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd.

iOS Hacker Stefan Esser Hints at iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Exploit

Infamous iOS hacker Stefan Esser (@i0n1c) has tweeted a series of messages on Twitter that, perhaps sarcastically, hint at an upcoming iOS 5.1 jailbreak exploit. Esser recommends that users download KakaoTalk Messenger version 2.8.8 before it is pulled from the App Store, teasing that it has nothing to do with a future exploitable vulnerability for jailbreaking… (more…)

Failbr3ak Shenanigans

gull1hackWith the recent discovery of a new baseband hole by Sherif Hashim and with some iPod touch 3G and iPhone 3GS owners stuck on 3.1.3 without a jailbreak we’re now moving headlong into failbr3ak season. Remember the amusing but ultimately frustrating appul0ha1l failbr3ak scam made around the time of GeoHot’s blackra1n release?  Well this time around the scams have got slightly more polished and a lot less amusing.

But don’t take my word for it, check out the immutably omnipresent iPhone Dev-Team’s recent blog post titled ‘Scam Season’:

Don’t fall for these scam sites!  None of them have a 05.12 unlock, none have the 05.11 unlock working on 3.1.3, none have a 3.1.3 jailbreak for newer devices like the ipt3G.

photo1Most recent of the failbr3aks is Gull1hack. Their website sports a nice GeoHot-esque interface and plenty of very recent posts and videos purporting to be evidence of their great new 3.1.3 3GS untethered jailbreak tool. They’ve been shown up to be fake by @musclenerd from the iPhone Dev-Team.

photo 2Next up is the Californian based team of juvenile failbreakers, SpartanBr3ak, who have tried to spam iPod touch Fans and have since pulled their jailbreak from release as they’ don’t appreciate the fake comments’ (lol).  They’ve been shown up on forum and all references and discussions of their scam removed. I have permanently removed one member of their team from this site for the continuing tirade of verbal abuse they sent me over PM, which I now continue to receive over twitter.

It may be fun and games to the scammers but it just creates unnecessary noise and prompts some to upgrade in hope of a new 3.1.3 jailbreak and baseband unlock.  These scammers aren’t community minded people and are only doing it for adolescent mischief or profit.  Expect more scam failbr3ak attempts but don’t believe the hype.

Pro Tip: as with all new firmware releases don’t trust any claims of new jailbreaks or unlocks unless they have been supported and/or sanctioned by the iPhone Dev-Team.  Don’t trust claims by unknown juvenile kids and definitely don’t donate to them so they can buy iPhones for ‘testing purposes’.

Worth Repeating [sic]

In light of the incoming new 3.1 jailbreaks it’s worth repeating MuscleNerd’s warning again given that some still haven’t grasped that there is NO carrier unlock for the 3G and 3GS on OS 3.1.  If you need a carrier unlock you need to use the Dev Team’s PwnageTool to create a custom firmware which has had a lower baseband hacked in.
