Despite Steve Jobs saying that every iPod was getting an update, there was no mention of the iPod Classic in today’s Keynote. But don’t worry Shåwa, the Classic is still alive and well, according to Michael Gartenberg.
Confirmed via email iPod Classic LIVES. No changes to price or storage. So not every iPod got refreshed. Only the cool ones.
Will the iPod Classic ever get an update? Probably not, or it wouldn’t be called the Classic.
iClassic is the oft-requested ‘iPod classic’ emulation for the iPod touch. Early adopters always missed the soft and receptive feedback of actual button pushing and the intuitive movements of the click wheel. I myself was one of those, having migrated from a 5.5 generation iPod to the first generation iPod touch. iPod classic fanboys, “your emulator” is finally here, and it’ll be retailing in the Cydia Store for $1.99 very shortly. iClassic is the brainchild of forum members Peleaz-1 and Cstsxyfry212. The creators were kind enough to give me a pre-release copy for reviewing purposes. Read on after the break for more on this innovative application.
An update to iTunes brings a few minor changes, including a much requested “dark background” for the people who can’t stand the glaring white one that shipped with iTunes 9.0. iTunes 9.0.2 adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.
Speaking to the “Rock and Roll” media event in San Francisco, Apple Marketing chief Phil Schiller announced the 3rd generation iPod touch, featuring more processing and graphics horsepower and a better price point ($199 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB).
Update 1: It appears only the 32GB and 64GB models will be getting the processing bump.
The iPod shuffle and iPod classic are also getting small updates. The iPod nano will get a video camera.
