Customer Orders Nexus 4, Google Sends Him Two

iFans forum member vxspartan117xv ordered Google’s new Nexus 4 smartphone a few weeks ago, receiving it from UPS yesterday afternoon. Just thirty minutes later, however, UPS returned and dropped off yet another familiar looking package. Inside was a second, unopened Nexus 4 device from Google.

After checking both his bank account and Google Play transaction history, the user claims that he was only charged for a single Nexus 4 purchase. Furthermore, upon checking the packing slip, he realized that the second Nexus 4 smartphone had the same order number printed on the box.

The legality of this situation has been greatly debated. Some users view this situation as theft, while others view the second Nexus 4 as an early Christmas gift for the lucky individual. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission does state that one has the right to keep unordered merchandise as a gift, but the examples provided are different:

…You respond to an advertisement offering a free “trial” pair of pantyhose. To your surprise, you receive four pair with a bill.

…You receive a pocket knife that you never ordered. Despite your objections, the company continues to send you notices demanding payment and threatening your credit rating.

Google has not reached out to this lucky customer, who plans on keeping the second Nexus 4 as a gift for his sister. Have you ever received something in the mail that you didn’t order? If so, what did you end up doing with the unordered merchandise? In this case, what would you do if you received an extra Nexus 4 device?

Forum Spotlight: Wii U Review

Forum Spotlight: Wii U Review

iFans forum member imranh101 has posted some enthusiastic thoughts about the Wii U:

As of now, the Wii U gets a straight 10/10 from me. I’m not a Nintendo fanboy either. I hated the original Wii, but they sure as hell did everything right with the Wii U. Go. Buy. One.

Nintendo is taking a new approach to console gaming with its Wii U. It’ll be interesting to see how the new console performs next to the aging Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, which are both set for a refresh in due time. Check out this user’s full Wii U review in the iFans discussion forums.

Opinion: People Need to Stop Predicting Apple’s Demise

Ever since the passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs towards the end of last year, I have noticed a growing number of people that have been pouncing on any negative situation that Apple encounters and blowing it way out of proportion. In other words, these individuals firmly believe that one mishap, such as the lackluster new Maps app in iOS 6 or ousting of Scott Forstall, is going to lead Apple to falter into mediocrity.

“This might be the turning point” is the most common phrase I hear whenever Apple receives bad press. What these people fail to remember, however, is that Apple takes so few missteps — there’s a reason they’re the world’s most valuable company — that when they make a mistake, it’s overly critiqued and analyzed.

For those that continue to believe Apple will falter, let me provide you with my own list of things that I believe would have to happen for the Cupertino-based corporation to decline in the foreseeable future. And even if some of these things happen, Apple might still be able to manage.

1. Jonathan Ive would have to leave Apple. Ive is a creative genius that has led design teams behind the iPod, iPhone, iPad and almost every other Apple product used on a daily basis. The monochromatic, clean design of Apple products has become the trend across the entire technological landscape. Competitors are taking direct design cues from Apple products. We’re talking about you, Samsung.

2. Apple would have to do something that truly frustrates its massive cult of followers. Yes, fanboys. And I’m not talking about Apple releasing a fourth-generation iPad just six months after the third-generation iPad. Motorola isn’t even releasing the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for some of its smartphones that it has sold in the past six to eight months, so you talk about who is being fair. No, Apple would have to pull an unforeseen move that truly aggravates it massive community of followers. The people that line up in front of Apple Stores to get the latest product. The people that are almost religiously devoted to Apple. The people that follow every move that Apple makes.

3. Apple would have to stop innovating. The company just launched a number of exciting products from the razor-thin iMac and iPhone 5 to the colorful fifth-generation iPod touch and iPad mini. All of these products are integrated flawlessly with the software they run, providing an excellent user experience. Apple is so meticulous about its design that it had to apologize for launching its new Maps app when it was probably not ready for the public. Apple products continue to sell by the millions, to the point that nobody is surprised when Tim Cook and company announce those sales numbers. It’s just expected.

Have You Ever Dropped Your iPhone?

Purchasing a new Apple product can be a very exciting experience, especially if it involves taking part in launch day festivities. iFans forum member Kyle Hultgren was an early adopter of the iPhone 5, although his fortune took a turn for the worse on Saturday, just one day after the smartphone launched, when he dropped his brand new iPhone, pictured above, on the way to watch American rock band The Expendables. Hultgren had already ordered an OtterBox case to protect his investment, but it did not arrive in time to prevent this accident from occuring.

Hultgren, like many other iPhone users, now has limited options in terms of what he can do to fix the broken screen. For starters, no third-party repair services carry replacement displays for the iPhone 5 because the device is brand new. Another option is sending the iPhone to Apple, although it can cost upwards of $200 to fix the display. Apple does cover accidental damage as part of its revamped AppleCare+ protection plan, for a less expensive fee, although proof must be shown that an iPhone does not have existing damage when purchasing this plan within the eligible time period.

Fortunately, Hultgren enjoyed the band he went to watch and can rest assured that he is not the only person that has been victimized by a shattered or damaged iPhone. We’ve seen our fair share of broken iPods, iPhones and iPads here at iFans over the years, and we imagine that there are even more horror stories that we have yet to hear about from our members. So, we’ll ask you — have you ever dropped or damaged your iPhone or other Apple device? Feel free to share photos of the damage your devices have taken, no matter how long ago it happened. Just try to hold back the tears.
