Rumor: Microsoft Office Launching on iOS, But Not Anytime Soon

Office-Word-iPad

Rumors surrounding the launch of Microsoft Office on iOS have been gaining traction over the past several months, culminating with a new report from highly-connected Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley for ZDNet that claims, based on a reliable source, the Office suite could gain iOS and Android support by Fall 2014.

Foley writes:

Also on the roadmap for fall 2014 is what’s listed as iOS/Android support for Office. One would assume this is the expected and widely rumored Office for iPad release. It could, however, be Office for iPhone and Android phone, given that it’s not listed on the roadmap as being tablet-specific.

One potential reason for the delay of Office for iOS could be the revenue sharing model that Apple imposes on all third-party apps. Microsoft apparently isn’t too pleased with giving Apple a 30 percent cut on sales of its Office suite for iOS devices, so there has essentially been a standoff.

Would you use Office on your iPhone or Android smartphone?

Apple Rumored to Refresh MacBook Lineup for WWDC 2013 Unveiling

MacBook Air

Apple has neglected to update its MacBook Air or MacBook Pro notebooks since its Worldwide Developers Conference last June, outside of a minor spec bump and price drop to the high-end MacBook Pro with Retina display, meaning that the lineup is long due for an overhaul.

That refresh could once again take place at WWDC, which should be scheduled for early June once again. The next-generation MacBook lineup is expected to utilize Intel’s yet-to-be-released Haswell processors, and the entire notebook family could gain Retina displays.  (more…)

Have Your Say: What Do You Think of These iMac-Inspired iPhones?

iMac iPhone

While rumors continue to circulate about a forthcoming low-budget iPhone, it’s not exactly clear what materials Apple will use to design the handset. We’ve heard that polycarbonate plastic might be used, akin to Galaxy smartphones, which has led to these iMac G3-inspired mockups by Nickolay Lamm and Matteo Gianni. I personally think the translucent, colorful plastic looks great, and nostalgically reminds me of the rainbow iMacs in the late 1990s.

A leaked photo of the purported Galaxy S4 mini (right).

Just a matter of weeks after Samsung unveiled its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, the South Korean handset maker appears set to introduce a miniature version of that device in the imminent future. According to a new rumor originating from SamMobile, the Seoul-based corporation could announce the Galaxy S4 mini at some point this week, in the aftermath of a series of high-profile leaks surrounding the purported device.

Samsung is said to offer both single- and dual-SIM models of the Galaxy S4 mini, with black or white color choices. We’ll assume that polycarbonate plastic will remain the material of choice, akin to larger Galaxy devices. The dual-SIM model will reportedly pack a 4.3-inch display — that’s hardly “mini,” at one-third of an inch larger than the iPhone 5 — 1.6 GHz dual-core processor and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.  (more…)

Apple Reportedly Cutting Back on iPad Mini Orders as Launch of Retina Model Approaches

iPad-Mini-Front1

For the patient group of users that have been anxiously awaiting the release of the iPad mini with Retina display, which seems inevitable based on Apple’s refresh cycle for iOS devices in the past, you’ll be pleased to hear that Apple has reportedly cut back on iPad mini orders as the launch of the second-generation model with a Retina display gets closer.

Unfortunately, this news comes from hit-and-miss Taiwanese supply chain source DigiTimes:

Apple has reportedly cut its shipments of the iPad mini to between 10-12 million units for the second quarter of 2013, according to industry sources. [...] Apple’s cut comes as it is adjusting its reserves for the next-generation iPad mini, which is likely to be released in the third quarter, added the sources.

While it has been unreliable on a number of occasions in the past, this report from DigiTimes does line up with previous rumors about a Fall launch of an iPad mini with Retina display. It’ll be interesting to see what Apple has to release before that time, as there hasn’t been an official media event since the original iPad mini unveiling in late October.

Rumor: iPhone 5S to Have Improved Processor and Camera, Launch in Third Quarter

iPhone 5 App StoreThe next-generation iPhone, dubbed as the “iPhone 5S,” is expected to launch in the third quarter with an improved processor and camera, according to DigiTimes. The report cites sources within the upstream supply chain, although Foxconn Electronics has refused to comment on the matter.

Components for the next-generation iPhone will start shipping at the end of May with the new smartphone to have a chance of showing up in the third quarter, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. [...] The iPhone 5S is expected to feature a higher-end processor as well as higher-megapixel camera modules, the sources said.

For several years, Taiwanese supply chain source DigiTimes has speculated about upcoming iPhone and iPad refreshes. On some occasions, its reports have turned out to be factual. At other times, its reports have been far off the radar. Because of its mixed track record at reporting Apple rumors, it’s difficult to take this latest rumor at face value. Nevertheless, we have shared it in the interest of discussion.

Reported Galaxy S IV Specs Leak Ahead of Launch Tomorrow

Galaxy S IV Teaser Samsung

Anticipation is running high for the flagship Galaxy S IV smartphone, which Samsung is set to debut at a media event in New York City tomorrow. But, just a day before that event kicks off, Bloomberg chimes in with some reported specifications about the handset.

The phone will sport a 5-inch screen, slightly larger than the one on last year’s S3, according to two people familiar with the product. The U.S. version will use Qualcomm Inc.’s quad-core chip, giving the phone more processing power to handle multiple tasks at the same time, they said. In other markets, it will rely on Samsung’s “octacore” eight-core chip, the people said.

The report adds that the fourth-generation Galaxy smartphone, the first that will be unveiled in the United States, will pack a 13-megapixel camera and continue to run on the Android operating system. With these generous specs, the Galaxy S IV could be positioned well-above the iPhone.

Report: BlackBerry Z10 Coming to AT&T March 22nd

BlackBerry Z10 10

The flagship BlackBerry Z10 smartphone will become available on American carrier AT&T on March 22nd, according to sources for Bloomberg. On that day, the handset will become available for purchases in stores throughout the United States.

BlackBerry relies on the United States for about one-fifth of its overall revenue, so it’s an important market that it must be successful in to ensure future growth. At the helm of the iPhone and Android smartphones, however, the challenge will be a difficult one.

Verizon Wireless has confirmed that it plans to offer the latest BlackBerry device by the end of March, while T-Mobile is aiming for a mid-March launch. Sprint, on the other hand, will carry the BlackBerry Q10 with a full QWERTY keyboard in lieu of the Z10.
