iOS 7 to Feature Flickr and Vimeo Integration

Vimeo Flickr iOS 7

The forthcoming iOS 7 software update will feature expanded support for third-party social networks, including Flickr and Vimeo, according to well-sourced Apple pundit Mark Gurman for 9to5Mac. The functionality should be similar to the existing Twitter and Facebook integration across the iOS operating system.

Apple users will be required to sign into Flickr and Vimeo once through the Settings app to enable access to the social networks on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Flickr integration will enable users to share photos from their iOS devices to the popular social photo service, which presently requires using the paid iPhoto app from the App Store.  (more…)

Which iOS App Needs the Biggest iOS 7 Overhaul?

iOS

There is a profusion of built-in iOS apps, but I think there are some that need an overhaul more than others. The next iteration of iOS is expected to ship with a general redesign system-wide, but let’s take a look deeper in to each app’s core functionality. A fresh and “flat” look will be great, but I think some of Apple’s apps are simply not as useful as they could be. (more…)

The Future of iPhone

This latest iOS 7 concept video is one of the best we’ve seen, although I’m not too fond of the square icons on the home screen. Plus, the user interface is a little too reminiscent of Windows Phone design language. Nevertheless, I would easily welcome the new approach to Notification Center and the stock Calendar, Camera and Music apps.

I just hope that Apple is also focusing on enhancing the features of iOS 7, instead of just changing the look and feel of certain elements. While a new user interface would certainly be refreshing, considering that the current design has grown rather stale, my number one concern is that iOS 7 delivers new functionality. It doesn’t necessarily have to be pretty.

Tech Publications Begin to See iOS 7 Traffic

iOS 7 iconIt happens every single year. Technology publications have begun to share their web analytics data showing visits to their sites from Apple hardware running the latest version of iOS. This is to be expected, but it’s interesting nonetheless to see iOS 7 being tested in the wild.

It started with TechCrunch reporting that OnSwipe has found ”a significant bump” in iOS 7 visits, but similar reports for their respective websites quickly followed from MacRumors and Matthew Panzarino of The Next Web. (more…)

iOS 7 Concept Features Enhanced Auxo-Like Multitasking

We’ve probably covered a half dozen iOS 7 concept videos in the past few months, a testament to how excited the Apple community is for the forthcoming software update. This latest mockup, courtesy of Ran Avni, illustrates enhanced multitasking that allows an iPhone user to control every single app that is open on the device at once.

Instead of a multitasking bar, there is a dedicated page that displays all open apps with card-sized previews. Each app can be closed individually, or collectively by tapping the “close all” button. This concept is reminiscent of popular jailbreak tweak Auxo, which revitalizes the app switcher that is activated by double-tapping the home button.

iOS 7 Isn’t Just a Visual Overhaul

iOS 7 Isn’t Just a Visual Overhaul

iOS 7 iconIs a new-look design for iOS 7 what really matters for Apple? Maggie Hendrie, the Chair of Interaction Design at Pasadena, CA’s Art Center, doesn’t think so.

“The very fact that we’re talking about who’s going to design the icons, who’s going to design the applications and the operating system is a little bit of a concern. Because that’s not innovative,” she explains. ”What I’m interested in is not so much what they’re going to do about skeuomorphism, and those awful leather book pieces and daily planners, but a couple things that Apple didn’t hit the ground running. Like for today, Wii and Microsoft own gestural.”

Almost all of the talk surrounding iOS 7 has been about its appearance and the move away from Forstall’s “skeuomorphic” design language. We must remember, though, that Apple is moving developers over from the OS X department to get iOS 7 finished. Apple wouldn’t need those hands on deck unless iOS had some big changes in store–something a little (or a lot) more than just a facelift. Also, let’s not forget that Jony Ive isn’t technically in charge of graphics design. He’s in charge of all human interface at Apple. What kind of revolutionary changes could he be bringing to iOS that we haven’t yet considered?

Have Your Say: Do You Think iOS 7 Will Deliver on High Expectations?

iOS 7 iconIt’s been over six months since the last Apple event, but the long wait might have been worth it. Based on multiple reports that have circulated over the past several months, Apple has been busy working on a radically overhauled version of its iOS software for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

It is widely believed that iOS 7 is in store for a “very, very flat” user interface, sans any of the skeuomorphic elements — real wood in Newsstand, stitched leather in Find My Friends, and so forth — that former iOS head Scott Forstall favored.

Apple design chief Jonathan Ive is in charge of UI now, and that should be viewed as a tremendously positive thing. Ive, who was formerly tasked exclusively with hardware design, has played a pivotal role in the look and feel of the iPhone, iPad, iPod and other Apple products for more than a decade. That should translate well to the software side.  (more…)

Rumors are Slowing, But That Doesn’t Mean Apple Is

Rumors are Slowing, But That Doesn’t Mean Apple Is

Well, if you were paying attention, you might have noticed that I left out one highly successful Apple product of the 2000s, a device that wasn’t part of the rumor trinity: the iPod. The iPod came out in October of 2001 and was something of a surprise to everybody. Rumors of an Apple digital music player had only sprung up about a week before it was unveiled. Before any of those storied Apple rumors above came to fruition, we got a product that wasn’t rumored at all. And, I don’t know if you noticed, but the iPod turned out pretty OK.

MacWorld did a great roundup of the Apple rumors from the last 10 years. While they note that the iPhone, the iPad, and the Apple set-top box were the three most-rumored devices, they remind us that the iPod was basically a complete surprise. Right now the Apple rumor mill has slowing, but the author of this article wants to remind us that that’s okay. Whether Apple’s next big thing is an “iWatch” or otherwise, they’re undoubtedly working on something. And Tim Cook says he’s ready to introduce an “exciting new product category” going into 2014.

Yep, iOS 7 Will Ship on Time

jtfsCountless rumors have been flying today that Apple is frantically trying to pull together its iOS 7 at the last moment and that said software update may be facing “delays.” Others, including 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman have said otherwise. iOS 7 will not be delayed. Apple is simply having to pull engineers from other departments to get it done. Connected Apple pundit Jim Dalrymple has this afternoon confirmed this information with the iconic “Yep.” (more…)
