iOS 6.1.2 Will Fix Security Issues and Bugs

iOS 6 logo

A number of iOS 6 security issues and bugs have surfaced in recent days, highlighted by a flaw that allows a user to bypass an iPhone passcode and gain access to the device. Moreover, enterprise users have faced difficulties in responding to recurring calendar events through Microsoft Exchange following the iOS 6.1 update.  Fortunately, Apple is aware of both problems, and is promptly working on fixes that will be delivered in a future software update.

“Apple takes user security very seriously” spokeswoman Trudy Muller told AllThingsD. “We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.”

According to German blog iPhone-Ticker, those fixes will allegedly come in the form of iOS 6.1.2, which the site claims will likely be released no later than Wednesday, February 20th. This source did accurately confirm the iOS 6.1.1 update in the past, just hours before it was released, so it does have some credibility and accuracy at reporting on iOS update rumors.

iOS 6.1 Security Flaw Results in Ability to Bypass iPhone Passcode

A new security flaw has been uncovered in the latest iOS 6.1 software update, allowing for a stranger or potentially malicious user to bypass the lock screen passcode set on an iPhone. The process involves dialing an emergency call, followed by tapping a sequence of buttons. The issue is present in the latest iOS 6.0.1, 6.0.2 and 6.1 versions. A similar bug existed back in iOS 4.1, allowing access to contacts and photos on passcode-locked iPhones, but was quickly patched by Apple. I would expect the same to happen in this case.

‘Pull to Refresh Safari’ Updated to Support iOS 6

Pull to RefreshYou are probably familiar with the pull to refresh gesture because of apps like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Mail on your device, but Apple has yet to implement the feature into the default Safari browser for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Thankfully, jailbroken users have been able to install the “Pull to Refresh Safari” tweak from Cydia to enable the functionality since iOS 4. Although the pulldown animation does not match the default one that Apple uses, this tweak still serves a very useful purpose.

If you have a freshly jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 6 or later, “Pull to Refresh Safari” now supports your device and is available as a free download under the BigBoss repository. What do you think of this minor tweak enhancement?

There Are Now Almost 7 Million Jailbroken Devices Running iOS 6

Evasi0n Evad3rs logo

Cydia founder Jay Freeman, speaking with Forbes, revealed that, as of Thursday night, nearly 7 million devices have been jailbroken on iOS 6. That impressive number makes the evasi0n untethered iOS 6 jailbreak by far the most popular jailbreak to ever be released.

As of Thursday night, Freeman’s alternative app store had received visits from 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod touches that were jailbroken with evasi0n, the first jailbreaking software for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.1.

While he does not have concrete data, Freeman notes that this latest jailbreak has brought in far more traffic to Cydia than previous jailbreaks, namely Absinthe and JailbreakMe. And there is a three-prong explanation as to why there has been so much demand for the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak.

First and foremost, Apple sold an estimated 136 million iPhones last year. Moreover, the anticipation for this jailbreak built up for a lot longer. It took 136 days for an iOS 6 jailbreak, far longer than prior versions. And last, users are becoming increasingly tired of the closed wall experience that Apple delivers.

“Smart phones have become more and more popular, but they’ve maintained a closed experience that makes it difficult for people to get what they want,” said Freeman. “Therefore people have needed to turn to jailbreaking to fill the gap.”

This is good news for the jailbreaking community, as an increased spotlight on this scene could result in even better Cydia tweaks, themes and apps. Moreover, hard-working Cydia developers will finally get some recognition — and hopefully revenue — for their useful tweaks.

Apple Seeds iOS 6.1.1 Beta to Developers

2013-02-06 12_35_08-Mac Rumors_ Apple Mac iOS Rumors and News You Care AboutLast Monday iOS 6.1 arrived, and its jailbreak arrived almost exactly a week later. And it will go down in history that a couple days after the release of evasi0n, Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 6.1.1 to developers.

What this will mean for jailbreakers is yet to be seen, but the update is most likely just bug fixes of some kind. If it is a fix of the holes that evasi0n exploited, now is a good time to remind you that you should probably update to iOS 6.1 soon. When apple releases iOS 6.1.1, they will undoubtedly stop signing iOS 6.1. In that case, you’ll be stuck without the great features in iOS 6.1, (assuming 6.1.1 breaks the jailbreak.)

Stay tuned, we’ll let you know what the ramifications of this update are as soon as we do. (more…)
