iOS Hack: Developer Adam Bell Routs Push Notifications Through Google Glass

This is really cool. Well-known developer Adam Bell, creator of popular jailbreak tweaks Stride and Cascade, has managed to port systemwide iOS notifications to Google Glass. The following video demo details how the process works, and it’s pretty awesome even in its infancy.

This neat hack brings push notifications to Google Glass from across your iPhone, no matter which app they are coming from: Messages, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or you name it. Due to the closed nature of iOS software, this implementation requires a jailbroken device.  (more…)

Badger Tweak Now Available

2013-05-21 19_51_04-

Badger is an arguably game-changing tweak that brings some fairly simple functionality to iOS. Using a configurable activation method, you can bring up the Badger window which shows any app’s notifications. From there, you can swipe to delete notifications, open them, and even quick reply to texts and iMessages.

In short, Badger is a notification center replacement of sorts that allows you to view notifications directly from the SpringBoard. One could argue that this tweak is similar to Velox in functionality, but I have found Badger to be far less buggy and to have a much more streamlined feel. It may not have all the functionality of Velox, but who really needs to add notes from the SpringBoard anyway?

The full Cydia description as well as a video and more information can be found after the break. (more…)

iOS 7 to Feature Flickr and Vimeo Integration

Vimeo Flickr iOS 7

The forthcoming iOS 7 software update will feature expanded support for third-party social networks, including Flickr and Vimeo, according to well-sourced Apple pundit Mark Gurman for 9to5Mac. The functionality should be similar to the existing Twitter and Facebook integration across the iOS operating system.

Apple users will be required to sign into Flickr and Vimeo once through the Settings app to enable access to the social networks on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Flickr integration will enable users to share photos from their iOS devices to the popular social photo service, which presently requires using the paid iPhoto app from the App Store.  (more…)

Which iOS App Needs the Biggest iOS 7 Overhaul?

iOS

There is a profusion of built-in iOS apps, but I think there are some that need an overhaul more than others. The next iteration of iOS is expected to ship with a general redesign system-wide, but let’s take a look deeper in to each app’s core functionality. A fresh and “flat” look will be great, but I think some of Apple’s apps are simply not as useful as they could be. (more…)

SMS GV Extension for iOS 6 Released on Cydia

SMS GV ExtensionSMS GV Extension, a popular jailbreak tweak that merges Google Voice SMS messaging capability with the Messages app, has at last received unofficial iOS 6 support. The tweak enables iPhone users to send SMS through Google Voice alongside the built-in MobileSMS module, the latter delivered by cellular carrier.

The jailbreak package is available on Cydia for iOS 6 by adding the repository http://cydia.angelxwind.net/ under Manage > Sources > Edit > Add, at least until it appears on the mainstream ModMyi or BigBoss repositories. The tweak has no icon, but rather is configured through Settings. A reboot is required after installation.

BlackBerry Launching BBM on iPhone and Android This Summer

blackberry-iconFacing increasing competition from cross-platform messaging services iMessage, WhatsApp and Kik Messenger, BlackBerry chief executive Thorsten Heins announced on Tuesday that BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be launching on iOS and Android this summer.

“The BB10 platform is so strong, and the response has been so good, that the time is right for BBM to become an independent mobile messaging platform,” claimed Heins.

The launch of BBM on iOS and Android has been in the rumor mill for over two years, so the move certainly isn’t surprising. The announcement was made at the BlackBerry Live 2013 conference in Orlando, although further details are limited at this point. Heins did confirm that both messaging services and the new BlackBerry Channels social feature will be supported by BBM on iOS and Android.

Alongside the physical keyboard, BBM has long been a major selling point of BlackBerry smartphones, so it will be interesting to see how the launch of the messaging service on rival platforms pans out for the Waterloo-based corporation. BBM, much like iMessage, is in essence a hybrid between text messaging and instant messaging. The service does not require a cellular data connection for communication.

New Tweak Googiri Lets You Use Google’s Voice-to-Text Results with Siri

Google Now

Google finally introduced Google Now for iOS a couple of week ago, and I’m personally still waiting on a native tweak adoption of the feature. In the meantime, however, a developer by the name of MattCMultimedia has released a tweak called Googiri. As its cheesily clever name suggests, the tweak attempts to integrate the two services with one simple activator action. (more…)

In-Store Device Repairs to Come with AppleCare Revamp This Fall

original

Apple’s Vice President Tara Bunch led a town hall session on Thursday, at which the Cupertino corporation told tech staff that big changes are coming to AppleCare and AppleCare+ services this fall. This “broadening” of the company’s current policies is intended to cut costs and make them more appealing to consumers. Of the biggest changes announced was the ability for customers to have their iOS devices repaired on the spot at Apple retail stores in the near future. (more…)
