Thread spotlight: Windows 8 tablet debate

I currently have a Dell Latitude 10 which is nice but seeing as I  got my tax return I’m thinking of an upgrade up to 600$. I’ve debated the Venue 11 (or 10 i forgot) Pro or surface pro 1 so far. I’m looking for decent gaming performance in legacy apps. Also 4 GM RAM and NOT RT editions of Windows.

I have always dual booted Windows 8 on my MacBook Pro with Retina display, although I’m curious what users of the iFans community use. Let us know in the comments section down under.

LeBron James feels sick about the Galaxy Note

Miami heat lebronAs anyone would often do, basketball all-star LeBron James of the Miami Heat tweeted to vent his frustration about his smartphone crashing and erasing all of his personal data. The only problem? James is paid to endorse the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone, which just happens to be the same handset he tweeted angrily about.

“My phone just erased everything it had in it and rebooted,” tweeted James. “One of the sickest feelings I’ve ever had in my life.” Unsurprisingly, considering his deal with Samsung, the tweet has since been deleted. But this is the Internet we’re talking about, meaning that retweets and screenshots are already out there by the dozen…  (more…)

OneNote for Mac coming later this month

onenote

The Verge is reporting that OneNote — a longtime Windows-only part of the Office suite focused on taking notes — will make its way to the Mac later this month. Additionally, the app is supposedly going to be released for the low, low price of free.

OneNote is one of the best parts of the Office suite on Windows, as anyone who uses it to take notes would support. The largest competitor it faces is EverNote, which has been available on the Mac since it was released.

Thread Spotlight: What do you think of the Moto G?

Moto GiFans forum member iHaxor writes:

So I’m getting my  Moto G tomorrow. And I wanted to know what program to use, if there is one, to root it. Also, what’s your opinion on the Moto G?

For those unfamiliar, the Moto G was released last November with an emphasis towards developing markets. The low-cost smartphone features a 4.5-inch screen, 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor, 1 GB RAM, a 2,700 mAh battery, up to 16 GB of internal storage and more. It can be considered as the less-expensive option over the flagship Moto X smartphone.

Thread spotlight: Is the Galaxy S5 boring?

Thread spotlight: Is the Galaxy S5 boring?

Echoing my thoughts from yesterday:

GS5I don’t find the Galaxy S5 to be exciting whatsoever. It’s just another boring refresh over the Galaxy S III and Galaxy S4 with some modest hardware improvements. I’m hoping Apple doesn’t do the same with the iPhone 6 or this could be another boring year for smartphones. At least the next-generation HTC One appears to have some hype.

Do you agree that smartphone upgrades are becoming too iterative?

16 GB Samsung Galaxy S5 has less than 8 GB of usable storage

Samsung Galaxy S5Android Central had a chance to use a pre-release Samsung Galaxy S5 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and what it discovered is something we’ve seen before: the just-announced smartphone has half its internal storage taken up by the Android operating system and TouchWiz bloatware. Just 7.85 GB of an advertised 16 GB storage is available…  (more…)

You can check your heart rate with these iOS apps

heart rate monitor app iOS

The Galaxy S5 was launched earlier today at Mobile World Congress, and one of its headline features was the inclusion of a heart-rate monitor. You can already check your pulse with these iOS apps, both of which currently go for $1.99.

Both operate by placing your finger over the camera, and the app then takes a pulse from there. In my quick testing, both were very accurate, though you do need to have your finger placed flat against the lens. Heart Rate Monitor by Plus Sports also includes the ability to check your pulse by just looking at the front-facing camera. iphone plus-and-samsung-extrawideiFans forum member ThePodofi writes:

Before everyone freaks out let me explain. So it seems like hating on Samsung is the cool thing to do, kind of like how hating on Apple is for some people. Yes, they’re are those occasional “shady” stories about them. But lets be honest, every company has at one point or another, done something shady. You can hate on those commercials all you want, but they were brilliant. When it comes to build quality and “cheap” plastic, that’s all opinion.

Read ahead for my thoughts, and share yours on the forums…  (more…)
