Coming Soon: Trade Apple Your Old iPhone for Cash

iphone-3gs-white-black

What if you could trade in your older-model iPhone at an Apple store for cash or store credit? Would you do it? A report from Bloomberg claims that exactly this may be happening in the relatively near future. Apple is apparently teaming up with Brightstar Corp. (STAR), a mobile-phone distributor, to get the program off the ground.

While the details of the program are scarce at this point, Bloomberg is of course a fairly reliable source of information. How much will Apple be willing to pay? And what models of the phone will they take? Will they take iPads too? We don’t know. But according to the report, people familiar with the matter claim the program to be starting as early as “this month.” Maybe we’ll see it mentioned on Monday at WWDC.

How would you feel about an iPhone trade-in program?

Gallery: Opening Day at Berlin Apple Store

Apple Store Berlin

If anyone thought that Apple was beginning to lose its allure, that mantra certainly hasn’t made its way to Germany yet. The first Apple Store in Berlin, the nation’s capital, opened on Friday morning local time. And, despite there being ten other Apple retail locations in the country, the crowds outside the store were massive. iFans forum member lauNchD was on scene in Berlin to take some photos of the excitement for us, and we’ve got the full gallery after the break.  (more…)

Apple Store is Down

WWDC-2012-Apple-Store-Down

Apple’s online store has been down for a few moments now, most likely due to routine maintenance. At the same time, the company could be revamping its online retail operations in the aftermath of its WWDC 2013 announcement earlier this morning. Whatever the case, we’ll let you know if anything is changed when the store comes back online.

UPDATE: It’s back online, and we’ve yet to come across any notable changes.

RadioShack Now Sells Mac Accessories, But Who Cares?

bss_apple_v5_mac_main

Here’s a little Saturday night RadioShack history for you. The company was started in 1921 by two brothers who wanted to provide equipment for the ham radio. In lieu of “free battery” card memberships in the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s and the marketing of what became the world’s first widely-adopted consumer computers, RadioShack now tries to be a mini Best Buy. As such, RadioShack has announced it now carries official Mac accessories such as Magic Trackpads, Magic Mice and Keyboards. (more…)

Should Ron Johnson Make a Triumphant Return to Apple?

Apple-Retail-Front

Apple retail chief Ron Johnson, famous for pioneering the Genius Bar, had a successful career for the Cupertino-based corporation throughout much of the past decade. Nevertheless, in November 2011, Johnson resigned from his post at Apple to become CEO of American department store J. C. Penney.

That stint would last only 18 months, as Johnson has been officially ousted from his chief executive position at the retail chain; the changes he made, among other reasons, resulted in decreased profits for the multibillion-dollar corporation. Johnson can sell iPods, but maybe clothes weren’t his forte.

In all seriousness, the fact that John Browett, the short-lived successor to Apple’s retail division, was also recently fired presents an interesting situation. That is, considering that Johnson did not necessarily leave Apple on bad terms, should he make a triumphant return to the company that he was so successful with?

Perhaps the better question is, do you think he will?

Former Apple Retail Lead Fired from JCPenney

Ron Johnson Steve Jobs

Ron Johnson, the man that engineered the strategy still being used today in Apple’s excellent retail stores, has officially been fired from his job as CEO at JCPenney. Johnson, who left Apple in order to take the Executive Office of the flailing department store, made many changes to JCPenney. While the changes (which included a ban on discounts, as well as an emphasis on in-store experience) both make sense, apparently they didn’t please the board of directors.

Ironically, Johnson’s job is currently vacant at Apple. The man hired to replace him was also fired by Apple CEO Tim Cook, and the office has yet to be filled as Tim Cook personally oversees the job for the time being. It would be quite a twist if Ron Johnson returned to Apple, where he did excellent work. His options, however, are certainly open: while Apple continues to grow its retail presence, other companies are also quickly trying to succeed in the retail space. Alongside the traditional players such as Best Buy, corporations like Samsung are also eyeing a store chain with intense interest.

Carlsberg Plays on Apple Store Experience in New Video Advertisement

Danish brewing company Carlsberg has unveiled a new video advertisement for its Somersby Cider brand, titled “The Somersby Store,” in which it promotes the new cider refreshment by mimicking the typical Apple Store experience.

Considering that Apple-related news publications would be quick to pounce on this story, including yours truly, this advertising campaign will in all likelihood end up being very successful for Carlsberg. What’s your opinion of the one-minute spot?
