Sharp Cutting iPad Display Production as Demand for iPad Mini Grows

iPad-mini-banner

Reuters reports that Sharp, one of Apple’s principal display providers, is cutting production on 9.7″ retina iPad displays. These cuts are quite severe; in fact, Reuters states that production has almost been completely “halted.”

While that alone sounds quite interesting, it’s important to keep in mind two major factors. (more…)

The Rich Get Richer: Al Gore Buys 59,000 Apple Shares for Just $441,000

gore1Apple stock might be facing a sharp decline as of late, but it still sits at an impressive $500 per share as of writing. That mark is good enough for Apple to remain the world’s most valuable corporation, with quite a distance over second-place Exxon Mobil.

Unlike most other shareholders, Apple board member Al Gore is probably not too concerned about the steep drop in AAPL’s valuation. Gore has taken advantage of his board membership option to purchase 59,000 shares of Apple stock for just $441,000.  (more…)

iPhone 5 Demand Still Strong

iPhone-5-3

Yesterday, reports surfaced that the iPhone 5 was experiencing weak demand, and as a result Apple was reducing their component orders. Given that the rumor originated from The Wall Street Journal, it was taken seriously by most - The WSJ has a fantastic track record when it comes to Apple rumors and information. That report sent Apple’s stock price tumbling, and it continued that fall today.

But not all is lost, or at least that’s what certain analysts have to say. While Apple may have cut the number of screens it has ordered from suppliers, the reasoning behind that move may be more nuanced than a decrease in demand. (more…)

Apple’s VP of Retail Jerry McDougal Leaves the Company

Zurich-Apple-Retail-Store1

Reports are flowing out from Cupertino that Apple’s VP of Retail, the right-hand man of Ron Johnson, who left the company to become the CEO of J.C. Penney last year, Jerry McDougal has left the company. Claiming that he wants to “spend more time with his family,” the report even claims that he was being looked at for the Senior VP Retail role, which was recently vacated after it was announced that John Browett would be leaving Apple.

It’s a rather surprising announcement. McDougal’s role apparently included marketing retail strategy and store operations, and he was often seen at the grand-openings of more high-profile stores across the country.

Phil Schiller: Cheap Products Not the Future of Apple – Updated

phil schiller

UpdateReuters made the call to pull their original article, citing major changes to the original piece by the Shanghai Evening News. Those changes including rewording of the parts relevant to the news reported. Those changes also affect this article. Reuters then pushed an update to their article, stating the following reasons for their article being pulled:

[I]n a new version of the story published after the original, the Shanghai Evening News removed all references to cheaper smartphones, except for a mention of a “cheaper, low-end product.” It also amended its original headline from “Apple will not push a cheaper smartphone for the sake of market share,” to “Apple wants to provide the best products, will not blindly pursue market share.”

Apple confirmed the interview had taken place and that it had contacted the Chinese newspaper about amending its original article, but had no further comment and declined to provide a transcript of the interview.

Six Years Ago Today…

iPhone unveil

Six years ago today, the late Steve Jobs stood before Macworld – an annual conference for Mac enthusiasts – and announced what would become one of the most influential (and best-selling) technology products of all time. Six years ago today, Apple unveiled the iPhone.

It’s interesting to look back six years: the smartphone market was completely different. RIM’s BlackBerry was the king of corporate communication, and Microsoft was the innovative underdog in the mobile phone space. Even Palm, a company now gone, was considered a powerful player, and their Treo line was one of the most iconic devices available.

Apple’s iPhone has since gone through its fair share of ups and downs, as has the software that powers it. It is, however, impossible to deny the success and innovation of the product, so here’s to the crazy ones.

The Macworld 2007 Keynote is available after the break. (more…)

David vs. Goliath: An Interview With James Siminoff, Chief Inventor of POP

From success, to failure, to an unlikely turn of events, Edison Jr.’s team of engineers and designers successfully changed Apple’s draconian terms of service and guided an interesting and innovative accessory to fruition.

Pop with iPad

A few months ago, the tech blogosphere was abuzz with a Kickstarter project that promised to create an attractive and useful way to power multiple gadgets and devices from multiple different manufacturers. Called the Point of Power – POP, for short – the device quickly blew past its funding goal of $50,000, and ended at $139,170. With the signs of a success on their hands, the team of designers and engineers at Edison Jr. quickly began work. The team, led by James Serminoff, aimed to create a device that was both superior in design and functionality to the competition.

However, just a few days ago the POP team received word that Apple was more or less killing their project by refusing them a license to the Lightning connector. (more…)
