Developer David Smith on background fetch in iOS 7: An unexpected botnet

iOS 7 Multitasking iPad

Developer David Smith — creator of my personal favorite M7-based health tracker, Pedometer++ — recently wrote about the server-side cost of iOS 7′s new background fetch. His comparison of a botnet may sound extreme, but some of his graphs back up such a dire comparison.

Also related: I recently wrote about a tip involving closing iOS apps out of the multitasking view. By closing an app out of the multitasking, it disables background fetch, which more and more apps make use of in order to refresh content.
