EA Buys Chillingo, Fails to get Top Developers

EA, one of the largest game publishers in the world, has purchased Chillingo for $20 million. Chillingo is well known for publishing Rovio’s Angry Birds and ZeptoLabs’ Cut the Rope, two of the best selling App Store games of all time. But, EA was not able to acquire either of these developers during the buyout. It’s unknown if this was a decision made by EA or Rovio/ZeptoLabs, but these two devs would have been an impressive addition to EA’s portfolio.

This is the second major acquisition of an indy app developer that has been made recently, and it looks like many will soon follow. There is a ton of money in mobile apps, so large publishing studios are looking to get a piece of the action. Hopefully, this will not affect the quality of the apps, or their dedication to the community.
