We’ve heard for countless months that Apple would be building fingerprint recognition into the next-generation iPhone, and that rumor has now come to fruition. The all-new iPhone 5S features a fingerprint scanner embedded into the home button, which Apple calls Touch ID.
Touch ID enhances the security of iPhones by enabling users to unlock their smartphone using their fingerprint, rather than typing in a traditional passcode. Simply place your finger on the home button, and your iPhone will unlock. Better yet, it works when making iTunes purchases.
The fingerprint scanner is comprised of four layers: a tactile switch, capacitive single-touch sensor, stainless steel detection ring and laser-cut sapphire crystal. With 360 degrees readability, the scanner can be used in both portrait and landscape orientation. Moreover, with support for multiple fingerprints, Touch ID can remember those who you trust too.
