Yahoo on Thursday released dedicated Mail and Weather apps on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Yahoo! Weather shows all weather information you would expect: current and hourly conditions, short- and long-term forecasts, wing and pressure, precipitation, and more. It combines those readings with stunning photos from Flickr, its popular photo sharing platform, alongside interactive radars and maps.
It is interesting that Yahoo has debuted a standalone Weather app for iOS devices, considering that it has a longstanding existing partnership with Apple to run the backend of its native Weather app on iPhone and iPod touch. Nevertheless, perhaps we are seeing Apple finally begin to loosen their restrictions on the apps that its competitors are allowed to bring to the App Store.
Yahoo! Mail, on the other hand, has already been released for quite some time, but just now received an update with native support for the iPad. The app is largely the same as its iPhone and iPod touch counterpart, but has merely been optimized to take advantage of the larger 9.7-inch and 7.9-inch displays on the larger iPad and iPad mini respectively. Both apps are free downloads.
