A Glimpse of Hope: BlackBerry Turns Profit in Fourth Quarter

BlackBerry Z10

After a couple of lowly years within the consumer electronics space, BlackBerry is finally starting to show signs of recovery. On Thursday, the Waterloo-based corporation announced its financial results for the fourth fiscal quarter, turning a profit of $0.22 per share on lower-than-anticipated revenue of $2.7 billion.

BlackBerry shipped 6 million smartphones in the quarter, of which 1 million were Z10 devices, yet its subscriber base dipped from 79 million to 76 million users. Nevertheless, BlackBerry is likely pleased with these fourth quarter results, especially after posting a yearly net loss of $646 million in 2012.
