Web-based file hosting service Dropbox has acquired the new Mailbox email client that debuted on iPhone last month. Mailbox has been insanely popular since its release, allowing users to sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis. At several points, the queue of users waiting to gain Mailbox access was over 600,000.
“We felt we could help Mailbox reach a much different audience much faster,” said Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, who said both companies shared the goal of making people’s lives easier.
Team members at Orchestra Inc., makers of Mailbox, will now join the Dropbox team. Mailbox plans to introduce support for its client beyond iOS and Gmail. It’ll be exciting to see what direction Dropbox can take Mailbox in. Are you still waiting in line for the app?
