Finnish game maker Rovio has discounted its insanely popular classic Angry Birds game to free, including both the iPhone and iPad versions, as part of Apple’s “App of the Week” promotion. As noted by various sources, this is the first time that Angry Birds has ever been offered for free on the App Store, following in the footsteps of Plants vs. Zombies, Fruit Ninja and Infinity Blade.
Considering that Angry Birds has been available for over three years, the game is now maturing in its life cycle and is inevitably experiencing declining sales. In an effort to reinvigorate sales and overall revenues, turning Angry Birds into a “freemium” style game, at least temporarily, is probably a smart move for Rovio. While there is no initial paywall, there are still numerous in-app purchases available.
