Mozilla has been surprisingly successful at gaining support and commitment for its new Firefox OS mobile platform, although its biggest potential partner in Samsung has denied any interest in the browser-based software, CNET has learned.
Samsung instead will continue to focus on Android as its main operating system of choice, along with its proprietary Tizen platform for far east countries and other emerging markets. The company plans to launch its first Tizen-based smartphone in July or August.
Fortunately, Firefox OS still has allies in Huawei, LG Electronics, ZTE and Alcatel to bring handsets to the market. Sony has also announced that it will jump ship, with plans to work alongside Mozilla and release a Firefox OS smartphone at some point next year.
