The Apple TV is, infamously, Apple’s only “hobby” product. It sells in comparatively low volumes, and seems to be on a much slower development schedule.
That may be about to change, and a new job posting hints that Apple is seeking someone qualified to help take the Apple TV in to a new generation of settop boxes. As noted by 9to5mac, the posting asks for someone with engineering and leadership skills:
The Apple TV team is looking for an experienced engineering manager to help deliver the next generation features for Apple TV. Bring your creative energy and engineering discipline, and help us bring the Apple experience to the Living Room…Work closely with cross functional teams, representing Apple TV across Apple
This hiring may signal that Apple is looking to expand the functionality of the existing product. The Apple TV, as it currently stands, is relatively devoid of any stand-out functionality, particularly when compared to other settop boxes, like Roku’s offerings.
