Cydia founder Jay Freeman, speaking with Forbes, revealed that, as of Thursday night, nearly 7 million devices have been jailbroken on iOS 6. That impressive number makes the evasi0n untethered iOS 6 jailbreak by far the most popular jailbreak to ever be released.
As of Thursday night, Freeman’s alternative app store had received visits from 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod touches that were jailbroken with evasi0n, the first jailbreaking software for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6.1.
While he does not have concrete data, Freeman notes that this latest jailbreak has brought in far more traffic to Cydia than previous jailbreaks, namely Absinthe and JailbreakMe. And there is a three-prong explanation as to why there has been so much demand for the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak.
First and foremost, Apple sold an estimated 136 million iPhones last year. Moreover, the anticipation for this jailbreak built up for a lot longer. It took 136 days for an iOS 6 jailbreak, far longer than prior versions. And last, users are becoming increasingly tired of the closed wall experience that Apple delivers.
“Smart phones have become more and more popular, but they’ve maintained a closed experience that makes it difficult for people to get what they want,” said Freeman. “Therefore people have needed to turn to jailbreaking to fill the gap.”
This is good news for the jailbreaking community, as an increased spotlight on this scene could result in even better Cydia tweaks, themes and apps. Moreover, hard-working Cydia developers will finally get some recognition — and hopefully revenue — for their useful tweaks.
