Now that the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak has been released, users have been able to tinker with full access to the iOS file system. And sometimes, there are hidden gems to be found.
The latest discovery pertains to hidden “Radio Buy Buttons” found within Music.app for the iPad running iOS 6.1. The files are not present on iPhone.
The files were uncovered by Twitter user Austin Smith, who promptly tipped the story to at least one Apple blog for further investigation.
Seth Weintraub for 9to5Mac soon picked up the story, confirming that the files do indeed exist and that they could pertain to a radio service that Apple might soon introduce to compete with services like Spotify.
“The iPad music app currently doesn’t have any radio functionality, so our first thought was that Apple would be adding an iTunes-like ‘traditional’ streaming radio to the iPad,” Weintraub writes. “Notably, jailbroken iPhones don’t contain these files in the Music app.”
A previous Bloomberg report claimed that Apple has been in discussions with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group Corp., and Sony’s music division about radio plans. The report suggested that service could be offered in the first three months of 2013, although that time period has yet to be officially confirmed by Apple or any of its potential partners.
