After a brief beta test in Canada, Facebook is now rolling out its voice-over-IP feature for its Messenger app to the United States. The feature started going live for users today, though it appears to be a staggered rollout. While some already have it, my Messenger app does not yet show the “Free Call” button. Apparently, no update to the app is needed, however it seems as if Facebook decided to update the app today with bug fixes regardless.
The feature looks well-implemented, and will certainly be useful to those who rely on Facebook for communication. Calls are able to be placed over both data and WiFi, though a faster connection generally ensures better sound quality.
This is currently only available on iOS, though Android support is rumored to be coming soon. It’s also worth noting that this does not support video calls; it’s strictly voice, at least for now.
