App Giveaway: Earth 101 for iPhone and iPad

Earth 101 App Store IconApple Maps and Google Maps have been at the forefront of iOS mapping solution discussions lately, but Earth 101 for iPhone (iPad app) is a truly awesome third-party app that also deserves a lot of recognition.

Earth 101 is a brand new app that features a 3D terrestrial view of the world, including its popular landmarks, more than 1,100 geographical objects and more than 250 other wonders of the world.

By tapping on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom left corner, Earth 101 provides you with a list of countries, capital cities, bodies of water, popular buildings and sports venues, and even streets. For instance, you can select the CN Tower from the list and it’ll describe the landmark and fly you right to Toronto, Canada to show you a 3D representation. Search for things both domestically and internationally, and Earth 101 will deliver.

iFans wants to give you a chance to try out Earth 101 for free, so we’re pleased to announce our latest app giveaway of five copies of Earth 101 for iPhone and iPod touch and five copies of Earth 101 for iPad. To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment on this post that contains “Thanks Earth 101″ somewhere within the message. We’ll announce the ten lucky random winners next Wednesday. Learn more about Earth 101 ahead.

Earth 101 has a number of other interesting features that are worth checking out. For starters, you can tap the weather icon in the top right corner to get the temperature and forecast for both your local area and other areas. Temperatures can be viewed in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. The app performs very smoothly, even when panning and zooming in, and supports the 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch.

Perhaps best of all is that Earth 101 doesn’t require a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection to function, asides from weather updates and the information tied in from Wikipedia. The developers behind the app are working very hard to push new updates to the app that will expand on its current data, such as adding new landmarks and wonders of the world.

Earth 101 really impressed me, and is available on sale as a 99 cents download for iPhone and iPod touch and $1.99 download for iPad. Your device must be running iOS 4.3 or later. Even if you don’t win this giveaway, this app is a highly recommended and very educational purchase. Grab the app quick while it’s still on sale.
