This year marked a significant milestone for the App Store, in that it passed the 1,000,000 available apps mark in less than five years. Apple has gone ahead and featured its annual Best of App Store list for 2012, which reveals that Angry Birds Space, WhatsApp Messenger, Draw Something, Camera+ and Where’s My Water? were the top five selling paid apps for iPhone this year in the United States.
Angry Birds Star Wars, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, Bejeweled and Tetris rounded out the top ten best sellers for iPhone, meaning that eight of the top ten paid apps were games. Even more interesting is that, of those eight games, three of the them were part of the incredibly popular Angry Birds franchise by Finnish developer Rovio. On the iPad, Angry Birds Space HD, Where’s My Water?, Pages, Draw Something and Notability were the top five paid iPad apps this year.
Switching over to free apps this year, YouTube, Instagram, Draw Something Free, Flashlight Ⓞ and Facebook were the top five downloaded free apps for iPhone. Skype was the top selling free app for iPad this year, while Temple Run, Facebook, Netflix and The Weather Channel rounded off the top five. Apple also highlighted some other apps from specific categories, such as Tiny Wings and Shark Dash under casual gaming and Clear and Any.DO for its intuitive touch section.
