Microsoft: Surface Tablet’s Display is Superior to iPad

Microsoft engineer Steve Bathiche participated in an “I Am A” yesterday on popular Internet aggregator website Reddit, writing about the Microsoft Surface during the questions-and-answers session.

One comment that Bathiche made in particular relates to how he thinks the Microsoft Surface tablet has a superior display over the iPad based on its perceived resolution.

Apple’s new iPad features a high resolution Retina display with 3.9 million pixels, far exceeding a traditional HDTV, and is perhaps the best display that any mobile device offers on the market. Bathiche writes:

“The amount of light in a room and the reflections off the screen have a huge effect on the contrast of the display,” Bathiche said. “In fact, a small amount of reflection can greatly reduce contrast and thus the perceived resolution of the display. With the ClearType Display technology we took a 3 pronged approach to maximize that perceived resolution and optimize for battery life, weight, and thickness.”

Then comes the iPad killer comment.

“Doing a side by side with the new iPad in a consistently lit room, we have had many people see more detail on Surface RT than on the Ipad with more resolution,” Bathiche added.

Bathiche is in all likelihood promoting the Microsoft Surface tablet on Reddit as part of a social media awareness campaign, although he does raise a valid point about the difficulties that can be associated with experiencing glare on an iPad screen.

Nevertheless, iPad users do not appear to be overly concerned about the issue, with an iDownloadBlog report suggesting that a large portion of users will be reading an iPad indoors regardless. Microsoft is set to launch its Surface tablet on October 26th alongside the public release of Windows 8.
