IDC, one of the more reliable and accurate analyst firms that monitors the tech scene, shows Apple’s share of the desktop market (as in, Mac vs. Windows vs. Linux) growing. It’s not all good news, though, as the overall PC market has declined in volume ahead of Microsoft’s release of Windows 8.
It’s unclear what exactly is causing the decline in overall shipments of PCs, though there are two likely factors that may be at play: first, the iPad (and similar tablets) aren’t being counted in these numbers. Tablets are currently the source of explosive growth, led by Apple’s iPad. The second factor is that many are waiting for Windows 8 to be released to upgrade their current laptop or desktop.
