Rumor: iPhone 3GS to be Discontinued Upon Launch of Next-Gen iPhone

According to The Telegraph, Apple will drop the iPhone 3GS from its lineup of smartphones following the launch of its next-generation iPhone. The report notes that the 8GB version of the iPhone 4 will become the entry-level device, while the iPhone 4S will be the middle tier iPhone alongside three models of the next-generation iPhone.

I find this move quite peculiar since Apple included the iPhone 3GS as an eligible device for its iOS 6 software update, which to me indicated that perhaps the three-year-old smartphone would retain its spot in Apple’s smartphone family for at least another year. Apple launched the iPhone 3GS in June 2009 and sold one million units during its opening weekend.
